Wedding Planning: First Dance

This post is a continuation of our blog series about the different formalities involved in a wedding and how to make your wedding what you want it to be. In our last post about Grand Entrances, we covered how important it is to set the tone for the evening. This post is going to take a different direction, because the First Dance should be all about you and your newly wedded partner. We’ll cover why you should make this dance all about you, songs that are currently popular as a First Dance, and ways you can customize and add a little something ‘more’ to it, making it that special dance you’ve always imagined.

It’s all about you…

If there is any part of your wedding reception that the Bride and Groom should be selfish, in my opinion, it is with your first dance. For many couples, this dance has significant meaning and says something about you, that maybe only you ‘get’ or know. It is a time that you might have hundreds of people staring at you, but you only feel like it’s the two of you in that room… in that moment. So, why wouldn’t you pick out a song that is meaningful and that will be yours for the rest of your lives?

That being said… remember that family and friends will be watching you like a hawk. They will be crying with you as you stare into your newly married husband’s eyes. They will laugh as you laugh at the jokes you make during your dance. They will also drop their jaws in disbelief if you start making out like teenagers at a high school dance in the corner of the room or if you grab your new wife’s backside in front of her parents. Most people know what is appropriate at this time, but for some reason, others think that it is okay to act however they want. You can never go wrong with showing your family and friends how much you care for each other and how much respect you have for them to join you in this dance of a lifetime. Leave an impression that will last a lifetime for you, but don’t become that youtube sensation for all the wrong reasons 😉

We don’t know what to dance to…

As mentioned above, most couples tend to pick a song that is most meaningful to them. But, sometimes we need a little help and can’t think of a song, or maybe there are is a new song that you want to dance for the very first time. For many, this will always be “our song…” Here’s a list of the current top First Dance songs as posted by DJ’s across the country:

We want to do something different…

So, you want to spice up your first dance little… do something crazy for your guests… maybe something unexpected? It is pretty common to customize your First Dance. Who doesn’t like the element of surprise, especially at their wedding? Shock factor will always make for some amazing moments, and maybe some you wish were not captured on video.

I always suggest to make your first dance whatever it is that defines you as a couple. Some people are shy and want it to be simple and quick. Others like the limelight and want to give their guests an impromptu comedy act.  If you want an intimate moment, then choosing a nice slow song and dancing for a few minutes sounds like the right choice for you. If you want to be creative, funny, and put on a little show for your guests, then maybe a medley or themed dance is also the right choice for you. This is your time to shine! How many opportunities do you get to be in the spotlight, in front of your closest friends and family? Take the opportunity to seize the moment and make your First Dance the one you and your guests will always remember.
